About Lexington Police
With an authorized strength of 633 sworn officers and nearly 150 civilian personnel, the Lexington Police Department is the largest division within the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. The agency’s mission is to serve and protect all residents and visitors in the city with a high level of integrity, transparency and dedication to community policing. The department is led by Chief Lawrence Weathers.
Lexington’s local government is a merged city-county system, so our police department has jurisdiction over all of Fayette County. Patrol beats range from urban areas, to suburban neighborhoods, to rural countryside dotted with horse farms.
Officers earn competitive pay and have many opportunities for growth through a variety of assignments within the department. The department is comprised of four bureaus:
- Special Operations
Each bureau is home to several units, with responsibilities ranging from traffic control, patrolling neighborhoods, criminal investigations, assisting crime victims, officer training and more.
