Connect 2 Agencies partnered with San Francisco State University to host the virtual Criminal Justice Studies Career Fair on Wednesday, April 29.
The event featured speakers from seven different law enforcement agencies located throughout California. James Dudley, a SFSU criminal justice professor and the event’s host, spoke to representatives from the Burbank Police Department, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Daly City Police Department, Hayward Police Department, San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, and Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety during the fair.
Presenters shared information about their agency, the hiring process, and any open positions they had. Some also spoke about their experience as a law enforcement officer.
“This is truly one of the closest things you can do to being a superhero,” said Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Lt. Jonathan Griffith. “You’re almost guaranteed to save a life with all the training we’ve given you.”
Speakers discussed potential salaries for a variety of positions, as well as additional benefits.
“If you’re bilingual, we give bilingual pay. If you decide to get a master’s degree or even a bachelor’s degree, we have educational incentive pays. There’s so many incentives,” said Hayward Police Department Sgt. Angela Irizarry.
They also shared what drew them to a career in law enforcement. Many cited their agency’s relationship with the people they serve.
“What really intrigued me about the probation/parole field is there was a lot of components combined,” said Supervisor Reyes on his decision to work for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. “We’re here to help the individuals as well as the community.”
The agencies collectively expressed hope for the future of law enforcement and encouraged attendees to pursue a career in the field.
“We’ve got some future leaders here today,” Dudley said at the event’s conclusion. “This is a great profession and you’re in the place to make a change.”
